The RizzmasillionCHAPTER 14

TRAGIC TIM: IT SOMEHOW GETS WORSE

Tragic Tim rolled up at Nacho Throne with this wrecked elf named Gwin the Ex, who looked like he'd been dragged through ten rounds with a cheese grater. Nobody recognized Gwin the Ex at first—Hell Basement had turned him into a ghost of who he used to be—but Fina Heartbreak, daughter of King Backup Orville, knew him right away. She'd been in love with him once, before everything fell apart. They let Tragic Tim stay because of that, and it didn't take long for him to basically run the whole place. He still wouldn't say his real name, hoping the family curse might just miss him if he stayed anonymous. In battle he was straight terrifying, a one-man wrecking crew that the orcs learned to fear.

Fina Heartbreak caught feelings hard for this tall, brooding mortal who wouldn't even look at her. Her old thing with Gwin the Ex just died. Gwin the Ex, still completely in love with her, gave his blessing but warned her straight: this guy is cursed by McEvilface himself, and falling for a mortal carrying that kind of baggage is a terrible idea. He told everyone Tragic Tim's real name anyway. Tragic Tim got mad, but Backup Orville ate it up. Suddenly Tragic Tim was the king's new favorite, and whatever he said became law.

Tragic Tim's big plan was that Nacho Throne should stop hiding like scared kids and just fight McEvilface's forces out in the open. He also pushed hard for them to build a massive bridge right across the Narog River, straight to their secret front door, so armies could march out easier. Gwin the Ex tried to talk sense—reminded them that staying hidden had kept them alive this long, that pride was about to get them all killed—but he was weak, scarred, and no longer the guy everyone listened to. The council went with the shiny new mortal instead. They built the bridge. They marched out swinging. For a little while it actually worked; they pushed McEvilface's servants back and cleared the land. It felt like a win.

That success gave just enough time for Stone-Cold Morgan and young Nina No-Memory to slip out of Sadtown and reach Doorlatch Forest. Theo Gatekeep took them in, but Stone-Cold Morgan's heart stayed heavy because her son was still missing. Meanwhile two elves, Gel the Warning and Arminas, showed up from the coast with a message straight from Uncle Ocean via Boatman Kier: tear down that stupid bridge, go back to hiding, big trouble is coming. Tragic Tim, riding high on his own hype, basically told the divine warning to kick rocks. Pride is one hell of a drug.

And then the dragon showed up. Gaslight Gary came boiling out of the north with an orc army behind him, exactly like Uncle Ocean had warned. The bridge Tragic Tim had insisted on building became a highway straight into the city's soft underbelly. Backup Orville died in the fighting. Gwin the Ex took a mortal wound but still had time to grab Tragic Tim and beg him: go back, save Fina Heartbreak, or you're both doomed. Tragic Tim tried. He was too late.

The orcs had already poured inside. The women of Nacho Throne were being rounded up for the slave roads to Hell Basement. Tragic Tim carved a bloody path toward them, but Gaslight Gary stepped in his way, locked eyes with him, and hit him with the full dragon-stare. While Tragic Tim stood there frozen, helpless, the captives were marched right past him. Fina Heartbreak screamed his name, over and over, reaching out like he was the last thing that could save her. He couldn't even turn his head. When the last prisoner disappeared up the road, Gaslight Gary released him and dropped a casual lie: your mom and sister are back in Sadtown being tortured right now. Tragic Tim believed it. Instead of chasing the orcs to save Fina Heartbreak, he turned west, chasing ghosts.

He reached his mother's empty house in Sadtown. Aerin, a kinswoman now living as a thrall, told him Stone-Cold Morgan and Nina No-Memory had left for Doorlatch Forest years ago. The spell finally broke. Tragic Tim realized he'd been played. In a rage he killed the Sellout occupiers, burned the place down, and left as a hunted man. He went looking for Fina Heartbreak next, but all he found was the Elf-Maid Mound—the Mound of the Elf-maid—where she had been speared to a tree and left. Her last words had been a message for him. He collapsed beside the grave and broke down. That was when the woodmen who lived nearby learned who he really was. They took him in.

The survivors of Nacho Throne trickled into Doorlatch Forest with the news: Gaslight Gary was squatting in the ruins like a scaly landlord, and Tragic Tim was probably dead or mind-controlled. Stone-Cold Morgan lost it. She saddled up and rode out to find her son, ignoring every single thing Melanie Magic told her. Theo Gatekeep sent Mabs Heavyhand to tail her for protection. Nina No-Memory, terrified of losing her mom too, snuck after them both. They reached Amon Ethir, the Hill of Spies. Gaslight Gary saw them coming, belched out choking vapors that scattered the horses, then climbed the hill himself. Nina No-Memory stared straight into the dragon's eyes. The spell of total forgetfulness hit her like a truck. She remembered nothing—not her name, not her family, not even how to speak. Mabs Heavyhand found her standing there blank. An orc ambush later scattered them completely. Nina No-Memory ran into the woods alone.

She stumbled straight into Backwoods and collapsed on the very mound where Fina Heartbreak lay buried. That's where Tragic Tim—now calling himself Doomboss Tim, "Master of Doom," because he still thought a new name could outrun fate—found her. She didn't remember him. He didn't recognize her. He named her Nina Teardrop, "Maiden of Tears," and brought her back to the village ruled by Brandon Nice-Guy. Brandon Nice-Guy fell for her instantly, but her heart went straight to the tall stranger who had saved her. Brandon Nice-Guy, sensing disaster the way only a guy who's watched too many group chats implode can, eventually told her who Doomboss Tim really was. A shadow crossed her face even though the name meant nothing to her memory. Still, when Tragic Tim said they were getting married or he was marching back to war, she said yes. They got married. She got pregnant. And in the same spring Gaslight Gary decided it was time to finish the job.

The dragon left the ruins of Nacho Throne and headed straight for Backwoods. Tragic Tim took a small band to ambush him at the river. Nina Teardrop followed in secret; Brandon Nice-Guy, still in love with her, limped after them both. The fight went sideways fast. Stones fell, friends died, and in the end it was just Tragic Tim and Gaslight Gary. He drove his black sword deep into the dragon's belly. The blood that came out of the wound scalded his hand and he went down beside the dragon, senseless, and heard none of what followed. Gaslight Gary thrashed, screamed, and with his dying breath looked at the woman who had just run up and said, "Congratulations, you found your brother." The spell broke. Nina No-Memory remembered everything. She looked at the man she had married, the child she carried, the blood they shared, and she ran. She threw herself off a cliff into the river and was gone.

  1. Brandon Nice-GuyShe's dead. Nina No-Memory is your sister. You married your own sister.
  2. Tragic TimYou're lying. You've always been jealous. You wanted her for yourself.
  3. Brandon Nice-GuyI saw it with my own eyes. Gaslight Gary told her right before she jumped. The blood, the marriage, the baby—everything.
  4. Tragic TimThen you're the one who brought this curse down on us. I should have let the orcs have you.
Tragic Tim asked his sword if it would take his life. It said yes.
