The RizzmasillionCHAPTER 18

THE GROWN-UPS FINALLY ARRIVE

The first people to see it were sailors, which tracks, because sailors are the only people awake at 4am looking up. Something new was in the western sky: a light that moved, bright enough to throw shadows, bright enough to see in the last minutes before dawn. It was not a comet. It was not a Valor Squad member doing a bit. It was a ship.

Recap, for anyone who wandered in: Spaceboat Eddie, half-Elf, half-Man, had sailed west with a Shiny Rock bound to his forehead — bound, like strapped on, like a headlamp everybody makes fun of until it gets dark — walked into Valinor, and asked the Valor Squad to please, at long last, do something about McEvilface. The Valor Squad said yes. But Spaceboat Eddie had broken the ban on mortals coming to the Undying Lands, and there was no clean way to send him home. So they took his ship, Spaceboat Deluxe, hallowed it, and set it sailing through the sky instead, with Spaceboat Eddie aboard and the jewel on his brow, forever.

Down in Middle-earth, nobody knew any of that. They just knew a new star had appeared and it was the most beautiful thing anyone had seen in an age of the world. They named it Hope Star: the Star of High Hope. Nobody could have told you what it was hope of. That's sort of how hope works.

  1. Boatman Kiernew star in the west. not on any chart. not moving like a star. moving like something being SAILED. going to go stand on a rock about it⭐👀

  6. Boatman Kierthe Grayscale Elves are calling it Hope Star, the Star of High Hope. the two sons of Finn in the replies are calling it inventory shrinkage😭🔥⭐

Up north, McEvilface saw the star too, and for the first time in centuries he felt a little unwell about it. But he talked himself down, the way you do. His whole strategy for the last few hundred years had been built on one assumption: that he had poisoned the relationship between the Nerdor and the Valor Squad so thoroughly that Valinor would never lift a finger for Middle-earth again. The exiles had left in defiance. The Valor Squad had let them go. Paradise was comfortable. Nobody comfortable starts a war.

That assumption had held up beautifully for so long that McEvilface had stopped checking it. McEvilface, my guy, you check the milk more often than that. He genuinely did not believe anyone would ever come at him in open battle again.

They came at him in open battle again. The host that sailed east out of Valinor was the single most stacked army the world would ever see: the Valor Squad's own power, the Vanilla Elves under Iggy Top-Elf's banner — the Vanilla Elves had not left the house in an entire age and showed up with the vibes of people who did all the reading — and the Nerdor who had stayed behind and spent the whole First Age not getting cursed. The Tide Squad, notably, refused. They were still grieving the kinslaying at Swan Harbor, and they were not about to go die for Finn's relatives. Then Ellie Birdwife — Dio Drama's daughter, and therefore Tide Squad blood herself — asked them, personally. So they compromised: they would crew the ships. They would sail the host east. And not one of them would set foot on the shore.

A host arriving: eagles overhead, ships landing, and a long line of blue-and-gold banners under the words VALOR SQUAD, while Melvin panics on a black tower to the right.

The two armies met on Ash Desert, the dust plain in front of McEvilface's gates, and the entire north of the world caught fire. This is the War of Wrath, and the scale is genuinely hard to hold in your head: mountains got rearranged. Rivers changed their minds about where to be. It is less "a battle" and more "the terrain lost," and I am fully convinced this is why every later map of Bellyland is mostly water.

Two details matter here. First, almost no Elves of Middle-earth fought in it — they'd been ground down to refugees and havens, and this was not their war to win anymore. Second, the ones who did march were Men: the last of the Three Houses of the Ed Boys, the descendants of the people McEvilface had spent generations enslaving, betraying and breaking. They got their vengeance in person. Meanwhile other Men — probably the same crowd who had sold out Max Onehand at the Crying Battle — showed up on McEvilface's side. The Elves noted it. The Elves would keep noting it for thousands of years.

McEvilface threw his whole roster into the grinder and the grinder ate it. The Orc legions were destroyed. The Fire Bouncers, those ancient fire-and-shadow lieutenants who had been unkillable set pieces for the entire age, were destroyed too — all but a handful, who dug down into the deep places of the earth and hid there. Remember that. That is not a throwaway line. One of them is going to wake up under a mountain a few thousand years later and ruin a hobbit's week.

So McEvilface opened the last box. He loosed the winged dragons — a thing the world had never seen, because until this moment dragons walked, which sounds fine until you notice that walking means you can just close a gate. Now they came out of Hell Basement in a storm of fire and wings, and the host of Valinor, which had been winning all day, broke and got pushed back. The battle went into the night.

And then the star came down to fight.

Spaceboat Eddie brought Spaceboat Deluxe out of the sky, headlamp and all, and with him came every bird in the world, with Eagle Boss Tony, Lord of Eagles, as their captain. The battle in the air lasted until dawn. Then Spaceboat Eddie killed Skaiju the Black, the greatest dragon that ever lived, and Skaiju's body fell out of the sky onto the towers of Spite Mountains and smashed them flat. McEvilface's fortress, the one that had loomed over every hope in this book, got deleted by a falling corpse.

McEvilface ran. The undisputed champion of evil in the world crawled to the bottom of his own pit and asked for a pardon, which is the single funniest thing he ever did. They dragged him out by the ankles, cut his feet out from under him, took the Shiny Rocks out of his iron crown and beat the crown into a collar for his neck, and chained him with God Chain, the same chain that held him the last time. Every prisoner left alive in Hell Basement walked out into daylight.

Herald Ian, herald of Manny Breezy, now held both recovered Shiny Rocks and issued a summons: every Elf in Bellyland was invited to come west and be pardoned. Two people did not answer.

Max Onehand and Mags the Bard, the last sons of Finn, were still bound by the Oath — the one their father made them swear, that they would pursue anyone who withheld a Shiny Rock from them, forever, no exceptions, no off switch. Herald Ian was withholding two. So they sent a message asking for the jewels back, and Herald Ian's answer was blunt: you murdered your way across three kingdoms for these. Your claim is void. The Shiny Rocks go to Valinor.

  1. Mags the BardI want to go west. I want to stand in front of the Valor Squad and let them decide what I am. I am so tired, Max Onehand. I have been tired since Doorlatch Forest.
  2. Max Onehandand if they keep the jewels? the Oath doesn't accept "I was tired". we swore by the Everlasting Dark. it holds after death.
  3. Mags the Bardthen let it hold. we have done enough evil FOR the oath. maybe the last evil is refusing it.
  4. Max Onehandfather's work. our hands. tonight. we go in quiet, we take what is ours, and if we die in the camp of the Valor Squad then at least we die keeping our word about something.💀
  5. Mags the Bard...
  6. Mags the Bardok. tonight.

They did it. Two Elves, disguised, walked into the camp of the host of Valinor, killed the guards on the treasure, and then stood back to back against an entire army, fully expecting to die there. And Herald Ian — who could have ended them with a gesture — refused to shed Finn-family blood again. He let them go. They ran into the dark with one Shiny Rock each, and for about four seconds it worked.

Then the jewels started to burn. Not metaphorically. The Shiny Rocks were hallowed things, and they would not be held by hands like theirs.

They finally had them. And the jewels they had killed a world for refused to be theirs.
